Updated for 2022…
Tis the season once again for gift-giving, gathering with friends and family from near and far, and celebrating one of the only ways we know how in America, with lots of heavy foods! There’s no shame in enjoying yourself, but the dreaded holiday weight gain doesn’t need to be a staple this time of year.
We know the struggle at Ruffier Fitness, but we never believe that making better choices has to mean missing out on everything you enjoy. With the tips below, you’ll be able to enjoy the festivities and avoid any unnecessary holiday weight gain in 2022 and beyond
1. Make it a "Holiday" | Not "Holidays"
With all the preparation, it feels like the Holidays are more of a Holi-month. Treat yourself on the official holiday itself, but don’t get carried away snacking all season long. And while we might not only be gathering and feasting on just one day, aim to limit your indulging to 3 out of 7 days, or less if you can help it. Keep a food diary to hold yourself accountable during the hustle and bustle.
2. Keep Up Your Regular Workouts
We’re all busy, but this time of year the runaround seems endless. While it’s tempting to put your fitness routine on the back burner, you’ll have more energy to keep up with the holiday hustle, and you’ll look and feel great while doing it!
Just 3 workouts a week, online or in person, incorporating cardio, weight training and flexibility can boost your mood, help you lose weight, and avoid the holiday weight gain.
Helpful Tip: Bring your friends and Family along to a group fitness class to make staying in shape easier to schedule!
3. Fill Your Plate with Just The Favorites
The holiday spread is always full of delicious, not so great for you treats and it can be tempting to get as much on your plate as you can fit. Don’t say no to the treats you really want, but focus on a select few that you can’t live without. This way you’ll be able to keep the same jean size without sacrificing your festive favorites.
Don’t forget to include the everyday nutrition your body craves. Add some fruits and veggies to your plate or at least supplement your indulgence with superfood smoothies.
Healthy Tip: It can be hard to get your full servings of fruits and vegetables any time of year. Make a shake with Amazing Grass to get all the nutrition you need when you’re short on time.
4. Drink More Water
One of the most important, and often neglected healthy habits we should be maintaining all year is getting our full daily water intake. Especially when you’re consuming more sugar and alcoholic beverages, dehydration can sneak up on you.
Even if your water habit isn’t already perfect, the holidays are the perfect time to start! Try carrying around a slightly larger water jug than you normally would, that way every time you fill up you’re getting a little closer to your daily goal!
5. Don't Beat Yourself Up if You Celebrate Too Much
Staying fit and losing weight is a lifestyle change, and lifestyle changes don’t happen overnight. If you fall off over the holidays, it’s not too late to get back on track. Don’t go it alone! The support of a personal trainer will help you stay accountable, and redirect your success if you find yourself behind on your fitness goals.
Working with a personal trainer is more than just having someone to teach you how to move. Your personal trainer is your ally, your partner, and your friend as you make changes, and even as you make mistakes.
